7 Things Every Renter-Pilot Needs

Now that much of the country is out from under the COVID-19 quarantine, I’ve been getting a lot of calls from “rusty” pilots, who want to get back in the cockpit. Nothing like a good lockdown to make people appreciate the freedom of flying your own airplane. Even if you have to rent it.

Everyone wants to know what types of equipment they need to make their flying safer and more enjoyable. With the major emphasis on the “safer.”

Here’s my list in order of real-word pilot benefits:

#1: A noise-cancelling headset. With so many options to choose from, I suggested that you start by reading my prior blog on choosing a headset.

#2: A portable Appareo Stratus 3 ADS-B receiver. With the Stratus 3 linked to an iPad, no matter what kind avionics are in the airplane that you rent, you’ll always have the important and free, ADS-B weather, traffic, and airport information you need right in front of you.

#2a: If you’re going to be renting an airplane that’s equipped with a Garmin GDL50 ADS-B receiver, your best option would be the new Garmin Aera 760 tablet. It’s a fantastic bit of technology that puts true situational awareness just a touch-screen away.

#3: Another must-have is a portable pilot tool kitfrom Groovetech. In my opinion, this is a must-have for any pilot – be they renter or owner. Having a wrench, safety wire, plyers, screwdriver, or other tools on hand, can mean the difference between an AOG, and an “I got home fine” situation.

#4: Next is a multi-purpose flashlight/USB charger. I put this right next to the tool kit in order of value. The Bush Pilot flashlight, not only provides a steady beam for pre-dawn pre-flights, it also doubles as an emergency charger for your iPad or iPhone.

#5: Last, but not least, you’re going to need sturdy flight bag to keep it all organized. One of the best is the Flight Outfitters Lift flight bag. It’s lightweight, compact, and gives you plenty of room to organize all of your flying stuff. And it looks cool.

Of course, these are just my top five. There are plenty more “must-haves” for renter pilots. As always, if you have any questions, please give me a call at 863.709.9714 (ext 112).

Until next time, fly safely and have fun,

Matt
